Where did the Siberian Husky Originate? The Siberian Husky has been a pure bred DOG, for many centuries.  It is NOT a half wolf or wolf cross.  The Checki people of Siberia developed the Siberian Husky as an endurance sled dog.  In 1909, the Siberian Husky was brought to Alaska to compete in the long-distance races.

Eye Disorders

Juvenile Cataracts -cataracts are an opaque film that covers the eye and interferes with vision.  Most dogs and people develop cataracts as part of the normal aging process.  Siberians, however, have been found to develop them very young, even as puppies.  It is extremely important that all breeding stock be certified free from juvenile cataracts. for more information, see the Canine Eye Registry Foundation or the SHOR (Siberian Husky Ophthalmic Registry).

Hip Dysplasia-  is a problem where the hip joint and socket do not function properly.  In general, Siberians do not run a large risk of having hip dysplasia, but it is also very important that all breeding stock have their hips x-rayed and certified by the OFA.

There are other genetic problems such as thyroid problems, and ectopic ureters that occur, please check back to the site, I am always updating and adding new information.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A PUPPY, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PARENTS OF THE PUPPY HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED FREE OF GENETIC DISEASE, AND THAT THE BREEDER HAS A CONTRACT FOR DEALING WITH ISSUES THAT MAY ARISE.
